Governor Jan Brewer is taking a closer look at allegations that several recently reported child abuse incidents in Arizona occurred despite numerous complaints to the state’s Child Protective Services Agency. Governor Brewer canceled a trip to the Conference of Border State Governors in Mexico to meet with Clarence Carter, her Director of Economic Security, to voice concerns and said of CPS, “It’s something that’s high on my agenda.”

In one event, a 6-year-old boy died after being admitted to a hospital emergency room with a brain bruise and other injuries. According to an internal CPS report, the agency had five prior notifications of abuse and neglect of the boy while in his parents’ care, though his parents have pleaded not guilty to child abuse charges.

At Governor Brewer’s meeting with Carter, she requested a “broader process that looks at the overarching child welfare system.” Amidst concerns of investigation backlogs and workers’ caseloads above state standards, advocates for children’s programs in Arizona believe that CPS has suffered from budget cuts resulting from the state’s financial crisis. During the review, Carter will also focus on making internal improvements and believes that organizational changes are necessary before deciding if additional funding is warranted.

The Arizona Republican Party and CNN announced on September 29 that they are co-sponsoring a debate between the Republican presidential hopefuls at 6 p.m. (8 p.m. EST) on Thursday, December 1. According to Governor Jan Brewer, the debate will highlight Southwestern issues like illegal immigration, border security, the housing crisis, and states’ rights. “These are national issues, certainly,” said the governor, “but Arizonans live and breathe them.”

Sam Feist, CNN’s Washington bureau chief and senior vice president, said that the network was “honored to provide voters in Arizona and around the country an opportunity to hear the GOP candidates present their vision for the future.” The debate will also be broadcast on CNN International, CNN en Espaol, and CNN Radio.

At the moment, a specific venue has not been chosen, but the governor did say she hoped it would be in the Phoenix area, in order to highlight the capital city. The debate has received a tentative blessing from the Republican National Committee, pending the details of the final proposal. Arizona Republicans are hopeful that the debate will raise the Grand Canyon State’s overall profile in the GOP nomination process.

Arizona will hold its Republican primary on February 28, 2012.

Olivia Cortes is a naturalized citizen of The United States. She has been a naturalized citizen for forty years. She says that she is running for the same seat in the Arizonian Senate as Russell Pearce. The problem that is being caused by her public pronouncements as being a legitimate candidate are not being reported by the Secretary of State of Arizona but are being asserted by other citizens who are backing another candidate for the same office. The other candidate actually running for the Senate seat is Jerry Lewis.
The situation is rather crony instigated. Olivia Cortes is a friend of Russell Pierce who has been recalled from his seat. It is the seat that Olivia Cortes says she is entitled to run for and advocates for Jerry Lewis say he should get. The problem that her detractors says should disqualify Olivia Cortes from running is that Olivia Cortes is a member of the famous Tea Party started by Sarah Palin. Her attackers claim that she is not a real candidate even though she is running for the office but a deliberately put on candidate to take votes away from there candidate, Jerry Lewis. Regardless, the fact that she is allowed to run is indisputable and whether or not she is doing it to keep Jerry Lewis out of office doesn’t disqualify her from running, after all, all opposing candidates run to keep the opposition from winning.

Due to the recent census tabulation, it is going to affect the Phoenix metro area, which is going to increase from 3 to 5 of the 9 congressional districts in the state of Arizona. The numbers were just recently counted, and it is found that due to a large increase in the city’s population, they are entitled to the largest congressional district, and that the citizens need the additional seats, in order to have their voices heard in the state. Phoenix was already the largest city in the state, but recent moves to the area, made a burst in the population, requiring that the citizens of the city get a strong vote in the state, since most residents live in the city, and that they have the most backing and funding, due to such a large population base.

Although the other 4 districts will remain spread throughout the state, the city of Phoenix has more than double the population than other major cities, and brings in most of the revenues to the state, so it is only fitting that they get the highest backing from the congressional standpoint. So, due to the recent vote, the city will increase their hold in congress from 3 to 5 districts.
